A 51-year-old German woman has died ten days after she was injured in a militant van attack in Barcelona, authorities have said.

It brings the total death toll from the twin assaults in Catalonia to 16.

The woman was left in a critical condition when the rented vehicle ploughed into crowds on Barcelona's famous Las Ramblas boulevard on 17 August.

That attack has now killed 14 people, and two others died during the driver’s getaway and in a separate car and knife assault in the Catalan coastal resort of Cambrils.

Yesterday, hundreds of thousands of people marched in Barcelona in a show of unity, many chanting 'I am not afraid'.

Of the 12 suspects linked to the attacks, six were shot dead by police and two died in an explosion before the van rampage.

Two are in custody on charges of murder and membership of a terrorist organisation, and two have been freed on certain conditions.
