A 37-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Irish woman Sarah McNally, who was killed in New York in March last year, a New York prosecutor has said.

Ms McNally, who was originally from Longford, died after being stabbed at the Céilí House pub in Maspeth in Queens.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz confirmed yesterday that Marcin Pieciak had pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of the 41-year-old Irish woman.

Ms McNally had been working as a bartender when Pieciak, who was her boyfriend, attacked her with a knife and stabbed her 19 times.

She was taken to hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead.

Pieciak cut his own throat with a second knife when attempting to flee the premises, but was stopped by a bar patron.

He is expected to be sentenced on 21 November to 24 years in prison to be followed by five years of post-release supervision, the District Attorney's office said.

Ms Katz said that Ms McNally’s killing shocked the community and Ms McNally’s loved ones.

"With this guilty plea, the defendant has been held accountable for his actions," she said.
