Woman and child have narrow escape after manhole explosion

A woman and child had a narrow escape when a manhole exploded on a footpath in New York, just seconds after they had walked past it.

The dramatic incident, which happened in the town of Poughkeepsie on Saturday afternoon, was recorded on CCTV.

According to the Poughkeepsie Fire Department, nobody was injured in the incident.

A second manhole in the same area also exploded, and an inspection of nearby buildings found high levels of carbon monoxide in several of them.

The buildings were evacuated until the gas levels could be mitigated, the fire department said.
