US President Joe Biden has postponed an event to mark the centenary of diplomatic relations between Ireland and the United States, although a meeting with the Taoiseach will go ahead.
The US president was due to meet Taoiseach Simon Harris in the Oval office tomorrow, and then host a modest reception in the Rose Garden at the White House.
However, the latter event has now been postponed due to Hurricane Milton, a category five storm due to hit in Florida.
The hurricane is expected to make landfall at about the same time the reception was due to be held.
However, a meeting between the President and the Taoiseach will still go ahead.
Mr Biden had formally invited the Taoiseach to visit Washington during the UN General Assembly in New York.
The two leaders were expected to speak at the event marking a century of bilateral relations between Ireland and the US.
The United States was the first country to recognise the Irish Free State in 1924.
A Government spokesperson had said the event would "be an opportunity to reflect on President Biden's career-long friendship with Ireland".
Despite the postponement, Mr Harris is still expected to undertake a number of other engagements while in Washington DC.
Speaking on the way into the Cabinet meeting, Minister for Children Roderic O'Gorman said that he has "no doubt" that the Taoiseach will use the meeting to "continue the message that we've always stated here in Ireland that we want to see an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and in south Lebanon".
"That we want to see the return of hostages and we want to see humanitarian supplies getting into the hundreds of thousands of people who are depending on them," he said.
The Green Party leader added that Mr Harris will make it clear to the US President and to the Israeli government about the "absolute essential safety concerns that we have regarding Irish soldiers serving with the United Nations, serving on the Blue Line in South Lebanon".
"I think it's a really good opportunity for these messages to be conveyed to the US President," he added.
