US Department of Defence chief of staff Kevin Sweeney has resigned from his post.
Rear Admiral Sweeney’s resignation comes a month after Defence Secretary James Mattis also announced his departure from the department.
He is the third senior Pentagon official to step down since President Donald Trump announced that US forces would be withdrawn from Syria.
Sweeney said it has been an honour to serve alongside his colleagues.
"After two years in the Pentagon, I've decided the time is right to return to the private sector. It has been an honour to serve again alongside the men and women of the Department of Defence," the official said in a statement.
