A Dallas police officer is being questioned after she shot dead a man when she entered an apartment that she thought was hers.
The shooting occurred on Thursday night, when the officer went into the apartment at the South Side Flats complex and shot a man who lived there.
Once inside the wrong apartment, the officer fired her weapon, striking the victim, a 26-year-old man, who was treated at the scene by responding officers, police said.
The man was later pronounced dead in hospital.
The 26-year-old officer told investigators she thought she had entered her own residence.
The officer, who was not injured, was placed on administrative leave.
Dallas Police Chief U Renee Hall said the case was not a standard officer-involved shooting and "we have ceased handling it under our normal officer-involved shooting protocol, a blood sample was drawn to test for drugs and alcohol, we're are in the process of obtaining a warrant, and we have also invited the Texas Rangers to conduct an independent investigation".
She said there are more questions than answers.
The dead man was named as Botham Shem Jean.
The St Lucia Times, a newspaper published on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, said Mr Jean was the son of a former permanent secretary of the island nation.
Dallas police would not confirm the man's identity.
The newspaper said the dead man had been an employee of PricewaterhouseCoopers and lived in a gated community.
