Police in the US are investigating an off-duty FBI agent's apparently accidental shooting of a man when the agent did a backflip at a Colorado nightclub, according to local media reports.

A video obtained by local television stations shows the male agent dancing in front of a crowd before executing his backflip.

The agent’s handgun can be seen falling out of his trousers while he is in the air.

The gun discharged while the man was picking it up, hitting a bystander in the lower leg.

The shooting victim was recovering in hospital from non-life-threatening injuries, the local ABC television affiliate has said.

The agent was taken to police headquarters and then released to an FBI supervisor.
