A fresh appeal for information has been issued on the 35th anniversary of the murder of former Sinn Féin councillor Eddie Fullerton at his home in Buncrana, Co Donegal.
On Saturday 25 May 1991, four armed and masked men broke into the home of Mr Fullerton - a father of six - and shot him dead.
The murder of the first Sinn Féin member elected to Donegal County Council was claimed by loyalist paramilitary group the Ulster Defence Association.
In a statement, gardaí said the investigation into the murder of Mr Fullerton is live and ongoing under the direction of a Senior Investigating Officer.
A minute's silence was held at the start of yesterday's monthly meeting of Donegal County Council in Lifford to mark the 35th anniversary of Cllr Fullerton's murder.
Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, who knew Mr Fullerton, said he was a tireless representative for the people of Buncrana and Donegal.
"For all of the years since, Eddie’s family have pursued the truth with justice," Mr Mac Lochlainn said.
Gardaí have issued a fresh appeal for information and said they believe that some people may now be in a position to provide information that they could not provide at the time.
They said any information received will be treated with complete confidentiality and anyone with information is asked to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074 9320540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
Gardaí arrested a man in 2021 in relation to the investigation into Mr Fullerton's murder. He was later released without charge.
A Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland report published in 2022 into the RUC's handling of paramilitary attacks by the UDA/UFF between 1989 and 1993, included Cllr Fullerton's murder.
Former NI Police Ombudsman Marie Anderson said she was of the view that in general, the RUC enquiries conducted on behalf of gardaí were completed in a timely and thorough manner.
Ms Anderson said, however, that investigators found no record that Garda intelligence requests in June 1991 and January 1993 were responded to by RUC Special Branch.
She also added that she found no evidence that the RUC made either Mr Fullerton or gardaí aware that personal information relating to him had been found in a loyalist intelligence 'cache' in Derry in November 1989.
The Operation Greenwich report states that the RUC senior officers met with garda counterparts in November 1993 and shared intelligence that included the names of persons responsible for the murder.
"My investigators have viewed AGS documentation confirming that this meeting took place and the relevant intelligence was shared," the Operation Greenwich report stated.
"This investigation has established that senior RUC officers informed their AGS counterparts that they had interviewed Persons J, K, N, and P about Mr Fullerton's murder but there had been insufficient evidence to charge them.
"AGS records examined by my investigators confirmed that the RUC informed AGS that these individuals had been interviewed about Mr Fullerton’s murder. The relevant interview records no longer exist," the report said.
The Operation Greenwich report detailed in January 2007 following a further review that gardaí requested that the PSNI arrest eight individuals in connection with the murder.
In June 2009, the PSNI, at the request of gardaí, arrested and questioned four people, and a fifth individual, who stated that he had been previously interviewed and sought to be arrested, was arrested.
All five individuals denied the allegations were subsequently released without charge, the NI Police Ombudsman report stated.
