An overnight fire has caused significant damage at the headquarters of Cherrymore Kitchens and Bedrooms in Donegal town, one of Ireland's leading suppliers of kitchens to trade and retail markets.

In a statement, Cherrymore Kitchens and Bedrooms said no personnel were on-site at the time, and they added that the premises will remain closed while the extent of the damage is assessed.

Several units of the fire service fought to extinguish the blaze in Ardlenagh, on the outskirts of the north west town, after 12am.

The family-owned business said they wished to extend their "sincere thanks to the emergency services for their swift response".

"We also want to voice our immense gratitude to our neighbour Shane and all the team at Donegal Waste for their incredible support during this incident.

"Thank you to our wider community for your ongoing patience as we work through this. We will keep you updated on our progress," they said.

Local road diversions that were in place overnight on the R267 were lifted this morning.

The family-run business is a significant employer in the region with showrooms in Castlebar, Co Mayo and Oranmore, Co Galway, alongside Donegal town.

In a statement, the Ballybofey and Stranorlar Chamber of Commerce said its thoughts are with the family-owned business.

They said it was especially devastating, as this year marked Cherrymore Kitchens and Bedrooms' 30th anniversary, and it employs many people.

The chamber described the facility as "one of the most advanced and modern factories in the whole of Ireland".

"We as a chamber will do our utmost to help in any way we can," it concluded.
