A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 23-year-old woman in Co Fermanagh last weekend.

The body of Ellie Flanagan was found in Enniskillen by police who were carrying out inquiries in relation to a crash on Carn Road near Tempo on Saturday night.

Martin McCarney appeared via videolink before Strabane Magistrates’ Court charged with murder and possession of three knives.

The 45-year-old, from Enniskillen, spoke to say that he understood the case against him.

A detective sergeant told the court that she could connect the defendant to the charges.

A solicitor representing Mr McCarney said that no bail application would be made.

He said that he had been instructed by his client to make a statement to the court.

"The defendant has asked me to publicly say that he is truly and genuinely sorry for all the pain and suffering caused to the immediate family and the community down in Enniskillen as a result of the events in the past week.

"He has asked me to make that conveyed to the court".

Mr McCarney was granted legal aid and remanded in custody until the next hearing on 30 March.
