Arrest after man in his 60s dies following Co Donegal assault

A man in his 30s has been arrested after a man in his 60s was found dead in Co Donegal.

The man who died has been named as well-known local businessman, auctioneer and publican Stephen McCahill.

A father of two, Mr McCahill was named as Donegal Person of the Year in 2016, and was heavily involved in the local community.

He stood as an Independent candidate in Donegal South West in the 2011 General Election.

Emergency services responded to reports of an assault at a home outside the town of Ard an Rátha in the early hours of yesterday morning and Mr McCahill was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man in his 30s was arrested at a second location and is being detained at a garda station in Co Donegal.

The office of the State Pathologist has been notified.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Ballyshannon Garda Station.

A Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to support the family of the deceased.
