The UK Met Office has issued a Status Yellow snow and ice warning for counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry.

The warning will come into place at midnight and will remain in place until 10am tomorrow.

The Met Office said following a spell of rain, sleet and hill snow this evening, icy stretches are likely to develop on untreated surfaces during the early hours of tomorrow morning.

It said there will also be some snow showers early tomorrow and that it could lead to patchy accumulations of 1-2cm of snow.

The Status Yellow warning comes as a cold snap has arrived for the entire country.

Met Éireann said temperatures are due to drop to between -1 and +3 degrees overnight.

Rain will develop in Ulster before moving south across Leinster and Connacht overnight. Wintry showers will follow in Ulster while Munster will stay mainly dry.

The cold stretch is due to last into next week with Met Éireann forecasting sharp to severe frosts and some wintry showers mainly affecting the north and northwest.
