A fisherman, aged in his 40s, has died after falling overboard from a fishing vessel off the northwest coast.

The incident occurred at around 1.30pm on Tuesday off the coast of Árainn Mhór.

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport said the Coast Guard marine rescue coordination centre in Malin, Co Donegal, responded to a mayday call from the vessel.

The Sligo-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118, the Aranmore lifeboat and other vessels in the vicinity responded.

The man was recovered from the water by the fishing vessel crew and airlifted to Sligo University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A technical examination of the vessel has been carried out.

The man was not originally from Ireland, but it is understood that he was an experienced fisherman who lived in Greencastle, Inishowen, for many years.

The Marine Casualty Investigation Board and the Health and Safety Authority have been notified.

The coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
