Two people have appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Co Antrim earlier this week.

Barry Furfey, 42, was found seriously injured in an apartment at Wardsborough Road in Lisburn in the early hours of Monday morning.

He was taken to hospital but died there later.

Melissa Atkinson, 38, of Wardsborough Road in Lisburn and Jamie Spence, 37, of no fixed address appeared at Craigavon Magistrate's Court this morning charged with Mr Furfey's murder.

The court was told a post-mortem examination had revealed that Mr Furfey had died of blunt force trauma to the head and multiple rib fractures.

A detective inspector told the court she believed she could connect the accused to the charges.

She told the court that a security guard at the apartment complex had called an ambulance amid concerns that a man had become unwell following a possible drug overdose.

Police were also called and detained the defendants after finding Mr Furfey lying in the living room of an apartment.

During interview they had claimed Mr Furfey had become unwell, collapsed and hit his head in the flat.

Jamie Spence told detectives he had punched Mr Furfey twice in the head after he had touched Melissa Atkinson's leg.

But he maintained it had not been a hard punch and they shook hands and made up. He alleged the assault had happened prior to Mr Furfey's collapse.

The court heard Jamie Spence had swollen hands and blood on him. The accused made no application for bail and was remanded in custody.

Melissa Atkinson's application for bail was refused after police objections.

The court was told she too had bruising on her hands and upper body, which she explained was due to her anaemia, as well as blood on her clothing.

The officer told the court her current address was the crime scene, that witnesses and a member of Mr Furfey's family lived in the block.

She also said that there had already been some community tensions around the "comings and goings" at the flat and they had increased since the murder raising the prospect of potential public disorder.

Both defendants were remanded in custody and will appear again on 13 October.
