An investigation is under way by the PSNI after a device exploded outside a house in Co Derry last night.

The device went off at Mullagh Park, Maghera at around midnight.

The remains of the device were found outside the property which was unoccupied at the time.

Damage had been caused to the windows, brickwork and to the wall of a house opposite.

A PSNI officer said army bomb disposal experts had taken the remains of the device away for examination.

"This was a distressing experience for residents who are dealing with the fear of this device in their community.

"Thankfully, no one was in this house at the time as this could have caused serious injury or even worse."

Members of the public have been advised to avoid the area and use an alternative route if possible.

Police said their enquiries were continuing and have appealed for information.
