Suspect in Fermanagh shooting dies in hospital

A man suspected of killing his wife and two children in Co Fermanagh last week has died in hospital.

Police said Ian Rutledge, 43, died in hospital yesterday evening following the shooting at a house on Drummeer Road, in which a woman and two children were killed.

They were named as 45-year-old Vanessa Whyte, a vet originally from Barefield, Co Clare, and her children, 14-year-old James Rutledge and Sara Rutledge, who was 13.

Mr Rutledge had been in hospital in a serious condition following the shooting.

Last Wednesday, police received a 999 call shortly before 8am from someone inside the house on Drummeer Road in Maguiresbridge.

Officers were despatched immediately from Enniskillen station around 13km away.

When they arrived at the property, they found four people inside with gunshot wounds.

Two of the victims, Ms Whyte and one of the children, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The second child died later in hospital.

'Bright and cheerful colours' at funeral

A service of removal will take place in in Maguiresbridge tomorrow morning. On Friday, all three will lie in repose together in The Church of The Immaculate Conception in Barefield Co Clare.

A private removal will take place the following morning in Barefield, before burial at Templemaley Cemetery.

People attending the service of removal and funeral mass have been asked to wear "bright and cheerful colours" in their memory.

The PSNI reiterated their appeal for anyone with information to get in touch, "no matter how insignificant it may seem".

Last Friday, hundreds of people attended a vigil at Maguiresbridge Primary School, where Sara and James had attended.

The gathering was told the community's heart was heavy and hurting.

Prayers were offered for the emergency services who responded to the incident and had been met with a harrowing scene.

Two minutes silence was observed in memory of the family.
