Operation to free 40 cows from overturned lorry concludes

An operation to free cattle from a livestock lorry which overturned on the M1 in Co Armagh has concluded and the west-bound lane has reopened.

The motorway has been closed in both directions near Lurgan following the incident which involved about 40 cows this morning.

The driver of the lorry sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

A number of cattle that had been badly injured were euthanised, the PSNI said.

Chief Superintendent Sam Donaldson said: "At approximately 5.30am, we received a report that a lorry containing approximately 40 cattle had overturned on the main carriageway.

"Officers along with other emergency services attended the scene and closed the road to ensure the safety of the public and welfare of the animals.

"A vet, along with specially trained officers attended the scene and humanely euthanised a number cattle that had been badly injured."

"The road has since been cleared, the remaining animals have been removed and the lorry recovered," he added.

The PSNI is appealing for witnesses or anyone with footage to contact police on 101, quoting reference 179 16/05/25.

A Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs spokesperson said: "The department is aware of the accident and whilst our vets are not required on the scene at the moment, we have offered support and resources to those on the ground."
