Letterkenny University Hospital is urging people not to attend its emergency department unless it is absolutely necessary, due to extremely long wait times.
It said all beds in the hospital are in use and due to the lack of capacity some elective procedures have had to be postponed.
In a statement, the hospital said that in the past 24 hours, 203 people attended the ED and that all escalation areas in the hospital are in use.
It said there are 77 patients in the department, and that admitted patients are facing long waits for a bed.
LUH said that anyone who needs urgent care should attend an emergency department, but anyone who does not require emergency care may face long wait times.
It has asked that people attend their GP or out-of-hours service if possible.
It added: "The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause."
