A man has died following a fire at an apartment building in Monaghan town.
Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene at Rowantree Court in Mulach Glas shortly after 8pm yesterday.
The man, aged in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The scene remains preserved to allow for a technical examination to be carried out.
The man's body has been removed to hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
Gardaí have said that the results of this post-mortem examination will determine the course of their investigation.
However, it is understood that at this stage, foul play is not suspected.
Residents living in the building were evacuated last night but they have since been allowed to return to their apartments.
