A large crowd has attended a vigil in Letterkenny at the scene of the fatal road traffic crash that happened in the early hours of this morning.
Two pedestrians, who were brothers aged in their 60s, were struck by a car as they walked home in the near lower Main Street in the Co Donegal town.
One of the men, named locally as Anthony Gallagher, later died at Letterkenny University Hospital.
His brother Martin was initially taken to LUH before being transferred to University Hospital Galway.
Mayor of the Municipal District of Letterkenny and Milford Cllr Gerry McMonagle said the incident has shocked the community.
"It's an awful shock to the local community in this close-knit area of Letterkenny.
"We can see that by the turnout tonight for this vigil. There are almost 200 people present tonight.
"Our thoughts and prayers are indeed with the Gallagher family, in particularly for Martin who is fighting for his life in Galway and with Anthony who has sadly passed away".
The driver of the car, who is aged in his late teens, was arrested at the scene of the collision.
He remains in Garda custody.
The incident, which occurred at around 3am, has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.
A Garda spokesperson said the driver had an earlier interaction with gardaí and because of this the matter has been referred to GSOC.
Garda Forensic Investigators conducted an examination of the scene this morning.
The car involved in the incident was removed from the scene and the road was re-opened this afternoon.
St Patrick's Day parade cancelled as mark of respect
The St Patrick's Day parade in Letterkenny was cancelled as a mark of respect.
President of Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce Jimmy Stafford said: "When you look at the cancelling of the parade today, it pales into insignificance compared to what the family of the deceased are going through.
"Our thought and our prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased and the man who remains in a serious condition in hospital.
"We thank our community for their understanding of our decision to cancel today’s parade".
A bouquet of daffodils and a holy candle were placed at the scene of the fatal crash.
Gardaí will be conducting door-to-door enquires and checking CCTV from the area.
They have appealed for witnesses, particularly anyone who was in the area between Dry Arch Roundabout and Oldtown Road between 2.30am and 3.30am and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to make this available to investigating gardaí.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on 074 916 7100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
