A man is his 20s from Lifford, Co Donegal, is in a serious condition at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast after a gang of five men entered his home and attacked him yesterday morning.

It is understood a number of masked individuals entered the house armed with iron bars.

The young man was airlifted to Belfast for treatment of serious injuries.

The man's father, aged in his 60s, who was in the house, was also the victim of a serious alleged assault.

He was brought by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment of less-serious injuries.

A garda investigation is under way into the attack.

Gardaí conducted door-to-door inquiries in the Lifford area and are working to identify the suspects and the vehicle in which they travelled.

It is understood gardaí are also working closely with the PSNI on the investigation due to the location where the incident occurred, which is close to the border.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Anyone who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from Coneyburrow Road, Lifford, between 10am and 11am, are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on 074 9167100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

Sinn Féin Councillor Dakota Nic Mheanman said the community is deeply worried and taken aback by what has happened.

Cllr Nic Mheanman said people are praying for the young man.

"I was talking to local residents today and they're all taken aback. Everyone is saying prayers now that the young man can pull through and that everything goes okay," Cllr Nic Mheanman concluded.
