Three people have been arrested in connection with a serious assault in Monaghan town that has left a man in a critical condition in hospital.

The incident took place in the Park Road area of the town between 10pm and 11pm last night.

A man in his 40s received life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

He was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where his condition is described as critical.

Earlier today, two men and a woman were arrested by gardaí investigating the incident.

All three people are being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at garda stations in the county.

Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward.

They particularly want to speak to anyone who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, from the Park Road area between 10pm and 11pm last night.
