The man shot and injured in Belfast last night was an off-duty police officer, the PSNI has said, adding that the incident is not believed to be terrorist related.

The shooting happened in Newtownabbey on the outskirts of Belfast around 9.30pm last night.

The injured policeman is being treated for injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and other offences and remains in police custody.

Forensic teams spent the day combing the area of Fairview Avenue and Beverley Avenue.

They were seen concentrating on a number of properties in adjoining streets.

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson appealed for information.

"Police remain at the scene of a shooting incident in the Beverley Road area of Newtownabbey which was reported at around 9.30pm last night.

"I can confirm that the injured officer was an off-duty police officer who was taken to hospital and is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

"My thoughts are with him, his family and we will offer every support to them while he recovers.

"While our investigation is at an early stage we do not believe this is a terrorism related incident."

Northern Ireland's Police Ombudsman confirmed that it had been made aware of the incident and was carrying out preliminary enquiries.

"We have been notified by the PSNI about the discharge of a police firearm during an incident in the Newtownabbey area at around 9.30pm on Monday 6 January.

"We are currently obtaining information about the circumstances to determine whether there are any issues regarding police officer conduct which require investigation by this office."
