A Co Armagh school teacher who took up powerlifting to combat symptoms of the menopause has won a silver medal for Northern Ireland in the bench press at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in South Africa.

Ruth Norton lifted 47.5kg, a Personal Best, in her 3rd lift in the Masters M2 category this morning to win place on the podium.

"To say that I'm elated is an understatement," she told RTÉ News.

"Here's what believing, backing yourself can do. Raise your own vibration, step one is your choice, just have a crack at something and a bit of craic along the way."
