A man in his 60s died after he got into difficulty while fishing at Machaire Maoláin in west Donegal last night.
Gardaí and emergency services responded to the tragic incident shortly before 8pm.
Speaking on Barrscéalta, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta this morning, Garda Siobhán Ní Chathmhaoil said the man fell into the sea while fishing from rocks at Machaire Maoláin.
"The Coast Guard took the man from the water and he was transferred to Letterkenny University Hospital. He was later pronounced deceased," she added.
Ms Ní Chathmhaoil said this was a "tragic incident".
Árainn Mhór RNLI volunteer crew were requested by the Coast Guard in Dublin to launch their lifeboat to reports of the person in the water off Machaire Maoláin.
Relief Resilience coxswain, Trevor Devereux said: "On behalf of Árainn Mhór RNLI we would like to express our sincere condolences to the family, also, we would also like to thank the Coast Guard staff with who we work very closely. It is always very sad when the outcome of a rescue isn't successful."
A Garda spokesperson told RTÉ News that arrangements will now be made for a post-mortem examination and the local coroner has been notified.
Machaire Maoláin is eight kilometres from the town of An Clochán Liath in the Donegal Gaeltacht.
Earlier this week, Árainn Mhór RNLI volunteer crew were asked by Malin Head Coast Guard to launch to a boat in difficulty off Toraigh on Sunday at 4.30pm.
Prior to arriving on scene at the stricken vessel the Bunbeg Coast Guard boat had reached the boat and secured the safety of all on board.
