PSNI detectives investigating the murder of 65-year-old Montserrat Martorell in Derry on Saturday have been granted a court extension for an additional 18 hours to question a 28-year-old man arrested on suspicion of her murder.
The murder took place in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Detectives from the Major Investigation Team have been questioning the suspect at the Musgrave Serious Crime Suite.
Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly has said that the investigation is moving at a fast pace and appealed to anyone who may have any information to contact detectives.
A murder investigation was launched after Ms Martorell's body was found following an "horrific" attack and a fire at a flat in the city.
Firefighters attended the scene on Harvey Street after reports of a fire were received at 4.15am on Saturday.
Ms Martorell, who was found in the bedroom of the ground-floor flat, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said that she suffered a "horrific attack and sustained multiple injuries".
DCI Kelly said that crews from NI Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of a fire at the house, along with NI Ambulance Service and our officers, but Ms Martorell "was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."
He said she had "suffered a horrific attack and sustained multiple injuries".
DCI Kelly also said he was aware of online speculation "which is extremely unhelpful and deeply distressing" to Ms Martorell's family and asked people "to refrain from engaging in this".
"We will investigate any posts online which could potentially prejudice judicial proceedings.
Women's Aid NI extended their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms Martorell.
"Our thoughts are with you at this incredibly difficult time, and we cannot begin to imagine the pain you are going through at the moment," it said in a statement.
It said that Ms Martorell is the 22nd woman to be killed in Northern Ireland since 2020 and the second woman murdered in Northern Ireland within the past seven days.
