Five people killed in four road incidents since Tuesday

Five people have died following four separate road incidents over the past two days, bringing the total number for the year to 109 - up 17 on the same period last year.

They happened in counties Donegal, Dublin and Meath.

In Donegal, two people died following a two-car collision on the N56 at Kilmacrennan at 11.50pm last night.

They have been named locally as PJ McGettigan and his sister Una McGettigan - both in their 70s - who were from the area.

Post-mortem examinations are due to take place.

A woman in her 40s, in the second car, was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardaí have asked any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling in the area at the time to make it available to them.

Separately, a motorcyclist in his 20s died following a single vehicle collision in Co Dublin yesterday.

The incident happened on the Old North Road in Finglas shortly after 2pm.

The road has since reopened following a forensic examination. A post-mortem is also due to take place.

In Co Meath, a woman in her 80s died in a two-car collision near Enfield.

The incident happened at 2pm yesterday. The driver of the second car was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown with non-life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed for a technical examination but has since reopened. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the three incidents.

Also, a pedestrian in his 40s died in Baldoyle, Dublin early yesterday morning after he was struck by a stolen car that failed to remain at the scene.
