A man has been arrested in Co Cavan in connection with the murder of a man in Co Armagh 45 years ago.

The 67-year-old was arrested earlier today under a warrant as part of a joint operation between gardaí and the PSNI over the death of Joseph James Porter on 24 June 1979.

He was also arrested for firearms offences as well as membership of a proscribed organisation.

He is expected to appear at the High Court in Dublin later today.

In a statement, the PSNI said its Northern Ireland's Legacy Investigation Branch had been liaising closely with An Garda Síochána and that "today's arrest further demonstrates the benefits of joint working between police services and other national partner agencies".

It added that the decision to prosecute this individual was issued by the public prosecution service before the Northern Ireland Legacy Act commenced on 1 May.
