An injured goat, which was stuck on top of a castle tower in Co Donegal over the weekend, is expected to make a full recovery after being rescued.

The female goat had scaled the 30m (100ft) tower near Greencastle on the Inishowen Peninsula.

Yesterday ISPCA Superintendent Inspector Kevin McGinley brought the goat, believed to be around eight or nine months old, to safety.

The goat, who had fractured her hind leg, is being cared for at the ISPCA Rehabilitation Centre near Ramelton.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr McGinley said the hope is to reunite the goat with her owners, but if that is not possible she will be placed in a good environment.

"The work starts today ... to ascertain if there's an owner for this goat and obviously we'll need to speak to the owner in relation to that.

"If not, the ISPCA will carefully monitor whatever applications come in to rehome the goat going forward and will obviously get the goat to a good environment," he said.

Mr McGinley said he has no idea why the goat went into the tower, but said they are a very curious animal and often get into situations where they "really, really shouldn't".

He said the ISPCA was alerted about the goat last Friday and it became increasingly clear that she was not going to come down of her own accord, despite the best efforts of a number of local people who tried to coax her down.

He explained that he monitored the situation throughout the weekend before deciding to bring her down off the tower yesterday.
