A murder investigation is under way after a 26-year-old man was shot in west Belfast.
Kevin Conway died on Tuesday following the incident at his home in the Greenan area of the city.
The scene was sealed off and forensic officers were concentrating their efforts on the flat on the Shaws Road.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil McGuinness said: "My thoughts are with Mr Conway's family, who are left trying to come to terms with their loss."
Mr Conway had been on bail charged in connection with a gang-related killing in Co Armagh.
He had been due to go on trial for his alleged part in the murder of Shane Whitla in Lurgan last year.
Mr Whitla, a 39-year-old father of four, was shot dead in an alleyway on 12 January 2023, over an alleged drug debt to a mid-Ulster crime gang known as 'The Firm'.
Prosecutors had claimed that Mr Conway's role had been to call Mr Whitla and lure him to the location where he had been shot by a number of other men.
Mr Conway had been granted bail last February but later absconded.
He was given bail again in July despite warnings that he could be the victim of a reprisal attack.
The PSNI said Mr Conway had been shot multiple times.
"This was a horrific, calculated and ruthless murder carried out in a busy residential area," said Detective Inspector Gina Quinn, adding that "such cold-blooded brutality has absolutely no place in our society."
She said the investigation would look at the fact that the dead man had been facing trial over a separate gang-related killing.
"This isn't about what Kevin may or may not have been linked to. This is about trying to find his killers.
"And certainly, any incidents linked to Kevin would form and do form part of the ongoing police investigation and be looked at as a line of inquiry."
She said a link to gang-related crime was one avenue for detectives as were potential links to a series of similar killings in west Belfast in recent years.
Police have appealed for witnesses to the shooting to contact them.
West Belfast MP Paul Maskey condemned the shooting, which was in his constituency, saying there is "shock in the local community".
"This is a brutal killing and a family have now been left grieving as a result. I unreservedly condemn it. There is no place for guns on our streets.
"Cordons are still in place and people are advised to avoid the area at this time."
SDLP west Belfast councillor Paul Doherty said the shooting "sent shockwaves through our community".
"Violence like this is a scourge on our society and creates serious fear among people living in this community," Mr Doherty said.
"There can be no justification for what has happened here, I would appeal for anyone with any information to come forward to police so that the people who carried this out can be brought to justice."
