Night of trad, theatre and supernatural stories in northeast

Culture Night will see an evening of trad music, theatre and comedy for people across to northeast region.

Cavan

There are more than 50 events taking place across Cavan to celebrate Culture Night 2023.

Street Life returns to Cavan, with performances from circus and street theatre acts from 5pm to 8pm at the outdoor performance space in the Townhall.

Afterwards, Cavan native Kevin McGahern is taking his comedy show inside.

Other highlights in Cavan include a 'New Voices' concert in the Market Square, BallyjamesDuff showcasing talent from different communities in the area, while the Virginia Gospel Choir will entertain people in Castlerahan.

The Tullyvin Musical Society will showcase its version of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, and the Killeshandra Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann will put on a number of performances on the night.

Meath

A free programme of events in Co Meath will be celebrated at art centres, community centres, galleries, libraries, cafés and public spaces.

Highlights from the programme include an outdoor concert from the Irish National Foresters Band in Navan, an open-air concert in Dunshaughlin park, a sculpture workshop in Ballivor, and a performance by harpist Méabh McKenna in Kells.

There will also be a night of storytelling and contemporary dance at the Solstice Arts Centre in Navan and a pop-up craft tent for children at Dunshaughlin GAA club.

Louth

In Co Louth, The Táin Arts Centre in Dundalk will be hosting several events, including open mic sessions and busking, while Culture Night will also mark the first night of the inaugural ‘Boyne Tradfest’.

The ‘Jouney of Hope’ exhibition in Drogheda Library has been developed with Ukranian and Irish photographers and will show a range of images of the war in Ukraine, along with images of families who have made Ireland their home in the last 18 months.

Other highlights include an ‘open house’ in Townley Hall, a 200-year-old georgian manor, and live music from Comhaltas in the Oriel Centre and the Ardee Brass band in the Ardee Library.

Monaghan

With two dozen events to choose from, the people of Monaghan are spoiled for choice this Culture Night.

The Patrick Kavanagh centre in Inniskeen will host a new exhibition of contemporary lace design by artist Theresa Kelly, inspired by the poetry of Patrick Kavanagh.

The Ballybay drama group will be spooking audiences with supernatural stories with a live musical accompaniment at the Ballybay Pearse Brothers Centre, while people are also being invited to an evening of intercultural performance by Monaghan’s Ukranian community at Monaghan Town Library.

Other highlights include a drive-in movie night at St Tiarnach’s GAA car park in Clones, a trad session in the Tin Church in Laragh, a blindfolded painting workshop in Clones Library and a céilí in the Doohamlet community centre.
