A number of packages believed to contain cocaine, which washed up on the Donegal coast, have an estimated value of over €4 million, gardaí have said.

Gardaí were alerted to the discovery of a package at Bá Bhaile Thiarnáin, Fánaid, at around 8.30am yesterday morning. Half an hour later, a similar second package was discovered at Tramore Beach, Dunfanaghy.

Searches are under way along the coastline and will continue in the coming days.

Landowners and visitors to northern Donegal have been urged "to be conscious" of any more packages.

Gardaí recovered both packages, which weigh around 60kg, and the contents of which will be analysed by Forensic Science Ireland.

A technical examination was carried out at both scenes.

An investigation is ongoing at Milford Garda Station.

A number of units are involved in the investigation, including the Garda Air Support Unit, the Garda Water Unit and other state and voluntary services.

Anyone who finds a similar package is asked to contact Milford Garda Station 074 9153060, their local garda station, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

A former head of the EU's anti-drugs smuggling agency, MAOC, has said it is possible that the packages are the result of a handover of drugs that went wrong.

An investigation is ongoing, based at Milford Garda Station.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Philip Boucher-Hayes, Michael O'Sullivan explained drugs are usually loaded onto a very large vessel in South America and offloaded onto a smaller vessel in the Atlantic to make their way to Europe.

Another possibility is that drugs were dumped by people transporting them, he said.

"If they're transporting the drugs in their daughter vessel and they see the air corps or they think there's a naval ship in the area or they find something suspicious, they will dump to drugs.

"It's difficult to say at this stage, but either way it's a very costly expense to lose that much pure cocaine while it's being shipped," Mr O'Sullivan said.

Drug gangs are innovative in the way they can deliver drugs, he said, but once the journey has been planned, there is rarely deviation from that route.

Mr O'Sullivan said the whole coastline of Europe is vulnerable to drug smuggling.

He said anyone who finds drugs in Donegal should leave it where they find it and call gardaí.
