Gardaí have said they are continuing to investigate "all the circumstances" surrounding an alleged assault in the Sliabh Liag area of southwest Donegal last weekend.

A body was retrieved from the water at the cliffs early yesterday morning with the assistance of the coast guard, and a post-mortem examination has since been completed at Letterkenny University Hospital.

Gardaí have said the results of that examination are not being released for operational purposes.

The results of both the post-mortem, as well as DNA testing, will help determine the direction of their investigation.

An incident room has been established at Ballyshannon Garda Station, under the direction of a Senior Investigating Officer.

Anybody who was travelling in the Sliabh Liag or Killybegs areas between last Saturday afternoon and last Sunday evening, and who may have noticed strange activity, is being urged to contact gardaí.

Anyone with camera footage from the area around that time is also asked to contact Ballyshannon Garda Station on 071 985 8530 to make it available.

Gardaí initially cordoned off the area eight days ago, to carry out searches in connection with allegations that a serious assault had taken place.

The cliffs remained closed to the public for most of last week, partially opening on Friday afternoon.

The area has been fully reopened to the public since Sunday.
