Gardaí investigating an alleged serious assault in the Sliabh Liag area of southwest Donegal have recovered a body.

It is understood the body was retrieved from the water at Sliabh Liag cliffs with the assistance of the Coast Guard early this morning.

The body has been taken to Letterkenny University Hospital and a post-mortem examination will take place tomorrow.

It is understood DNA analysis will also be used to officially identify the body.

The results of both the post-mortem and DNA testing will help determine the direction of the investigation.

Gardaí cordoned off the area last Monday to carry out searches in connection with allegations that a serious assault had taken place in the Killybegs/Sliabh Liag area, sometime between the afternoon of Saturday 24 June and the evening of Sunday 25 June.

The cliffs remained closed to the public for most of last week, partially opening on Friday afternoon.

Yesterday, gardaí confirmed the area was now fully open to the public and renewed an appeal for information which might help their investigation.
