The Irish Air Corps has been deployed to help put out a huge gorse fire in Northern Ireland.

It is helping to tackle the blaze along a 1km fire front in Glenariff, Co Antrim, and is dumping water on the flames from the air.

Around 80 firefighters from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service have been tackling the fire for several days.

Fourteen fire engines are at the scene.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue service declared a major incident yesterday evening and the alert remains in place.

Deputy Chief Fire and Rescue Officer Paul Harper welcomed the support of the Irish Air Corps.

He said: "Deploying water onto the fire from the air will greatly enhance our firefighting operations.

"Due to the deep seated nature of the fire and the sheer size and scale, a formal request was made for a specialist aerial resource."

The fire is expected to burn for another couple of days.
