The Army was called to deal with a suspicious device that was found in Monaghan town today, with the County Council saying it "appears to be an old hand grenade".

Reports about the suspicious object at a location on the North Road in Monaghan town were received at about 10.10am this morning.

Gardaí set up a cordon in the area and the services of the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were requested.

The device was found at the site of the new Monaghan Peace Campus, which is currently under construction.

Monaghan County Council said that the contractor at the site notified it about the device earlier today, which "appears to be an old hand grenade".

The Peace Campus is a €17m project that when complete, will house a new cultural heritage centre, library, and youth facility space.
