Man arrested following stabbing at Newry hospital

A 57-year-old man has been arrested following a stabbing incident at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry early this morning.

Police in Northern Ireland say a nurse received a cut to her neck and chin area and a healthcare assistant suffered a "puncture wound" to his side.

The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The Southern Health and Social Care Trust group confirmed that two members of staff at hospital were injured during what it called a "distressing incident".

It said both people were taken to the Emergency Department for assessment and treatment.

"Thankfully, neither has sustained life threatening injuries as result of this distressing incident," it said.

One the injured people remains in hospital as a "precaution".

Northern Ireland's Health Minister Robin Swann described the incident as "appalling and distressing".

He wished the injured staff members a full and quick recovery.

SDLP MLA for the area Justin McNulty expressed shock over what happened.

He said it was "shocking, sad and scary" for staff on the frontline to have their lives put at risk.

"I have spoken to Police and have contacted the Chief Executive of the Southern Trust. Action must be taken so that all hospital staff who are bravely saving lives every day can feel safe and secure doing their jobs", he said.
