Police in Northern Ireland have said that around £12 million of suspected drugs have been seized following operations involving the PSNI and police in Belgium.

In a statement, the PSNI said there has been an ongoing investigation into the importation of Class A drugs involving an organised crime group based in Northern Ireland. It said that the group is believed to be operating on an international scale.

The PSNI said they have been liaising with Belgian police in their investigation.

Last Friday, Belgian authorities searched a car and seized a large amount of suspected cocaine.

The next day two men were arrested in Belfast in relation to the investigation into the Belgian seizure. The men are on police bail while the investigation continues.

Separately, a 34-year-old man was arrested yesterday following the seizure of herbal cannabis in Newry. The seizure was made following a search at a haulage yard.

The Head of the PSNI's Criminal Investigation Detective Chief Supt John McVea said: "The cannabis seizure in Newry is the largest seizure to date in Northern Ireland. There is no doubt that by taking these drugs off the streets of Northern Ireland we have significantly impacted the funding stream of this organised crime gang.

"We will continue to work in partnership with our colleagues in the Organised Crime Taskforce to identify, disrupt, dismantle and frustrate organised crime gangs, not only in Northern Ireland, but across Europe."
