A man has died in a fire that broke out at an apartment building in Cavan town yesterday evening.

Both gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the blaze which broke out just before 8pm at the building off Main Street.

The body of the man, who is believed to be 40 years old, was discovered in one of the apartments when the fire was brought under control.

Two other adults and a child were rescued from the building and taken to Cavan General Hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation.

It is understood two firemen were also treated for minor injuries.

As the emergency service dealt with the blaze, Main Street was closed to traffic.

Gardaí are investigating. The cause of the fire is not yet known but it is not believed to be suspicious.
