A road in Co Monaghan which had been closed for over eight months following the emergence of a sinkhole close to Magheracloone has reopened.

A statement from Monaghan County Council tonight confirmed that road diversions have been lifted and the public can use the local route at Drumgossatt with immediate effect.

The local authority said an extensive programme of safety measures had been put in place.

It includes the installation of eight extensometers to monitor ground conditions.

Additional measures will be put in place in the coming days to monitor ground conditions into the future, the statement said.

Monaghan County Council apologised to those affected by the road closures.

However it said public safety was its primary consideration at all times.

The sinkhole, located 35 metres from the LP4900 road at Drumgossatt, was found on land owned by Gyproc, a plaster manufacturer.

It was discovered during ongoing monitoring of the Drumgossatt mine workings.

The sinkhole was entirely separate from the subsidence at Magheracloone Mitchells GAA club last September.

The pitch sustained major damage.

The statement confirmed that demolition work on the GAA grounds where the old mine shaft collapsed will "commence shortly".
