It boasts the highest accessible sea-cliffs in Europe at over 600m and now Sliabh Liag in southwest Donegal is even more accessible to visitors after the completion of major works by Donegal County Council and Fáilte Ireland.

Costing almost €5m, the project includes a visitor centre, improved road access and 2.5km of new mountain pathway.

The project took longer than anticipated at five years but Donegal County Council Director of Services, Liam Ward, is delighted with the results and visitors on the mountain today agreed that it was a stunning experience.

The project was a challenging one in a sensitive area and tonnes of stone had to be air-lifted to the top of the mountain for the new pathways.

Mr Ward said Lessons have been learned for working in sensitive environments like Sliabh Liag including the importance of working closely with the local community, employing good contractors and using material local to the area.

Attracting over 160,000 visitors a year, it's hoped that the number of visitors to Sliabh Liag will grow thanks to the new facilities.

However, Mr Ward said that while they want to see more people coming to enjoy Sliabh Liag, the growth in numbers must be done in a sustainable way which does not see the mountain over-run by visitors and damaged for future generations.
