A garda investigation has begun in Co Donegal following the deaths of an elderly couple in a house at Fountain Terrace in Convoy.

The man who was in his 80s and the woman in her 70s were last seen yesterday afternoon.

It is understood the couple were found by a relative who alerted gardaí.

Gardaí say they are keeping an open mind in relation to the deaths however, it appears at this stage that there are no suspicious circumstances.

According to a garda source, there was no sign of a break-in or of any trauma at the house where the married couple lived.

The coroner for Co Donegal is due at the house and post-mortem examinations will be carried out later.

The results of those examinations will determine the course of the garda investigation. 

The scene has been sealed off for a forensic examination.
