Eight searches have taken place in north Monaghan as part of an operation into a cross border smuggling gang.

Six residential properties and two business premises were searched during the operation, which was led by the Criminal Assets Bureau.

€10,000 in cash was seized along with mobile phones, electronic storage devices and documentation relating to property ownership.

Officers, assisted by the Emergency Response Unit, also discovered evidence of illicit tobacco and alcohol smuggling.

Viagra tablets were also found.

The investigation is targeting an organised crime gang operating in the border region which is involved in the importation and distribution of illegal cigarettes and counterfeit goods.

It is believed the gang, which includes a number of dissident republicans, is investing in mostly distressed properties.
