Two Donegal men living in Boston who helped raise $120,000 for people affected by the floods in Inishowen in August last year, have been honoured with an award by Donegal County Council.
Oran McGonagle from Moville and Declan Houton from Malin were presented with the Tip O’Neill award at a dinner in Buncrana last night.
They accepted it on behalf of the 20 members of the Homes of Donegal Fundraising Committee who raised the money for flood victims and said they dedicated the award to every Irish immigrant throughout the world.
The tip O’Neill awards were established in 2012 to mark the centenary of the American politician Tip O’Neill whose maternal grandparents came from Inishowen.
They are annually by Donegal County Council to members of the Irish diaspora who have made a remarkable contribution in their chosen field and for their interest in and support for Ireland and its diaspora.
Tip O’Neill Awards were also presented last night to the former Governor of Maryland Martin O’Malley and to professional golfer and sports commentator Paul McGinley, whose father Mick accepted the award on his behalf.
