Inishowen natives hoping Irish open will boost tourism

With a global focus on Ballyliffin this week for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, the people of the Inishowen peninsula will be hoping that the momentum will be maintained and the area will be recognised for all that it has to offer.

There has been huge community backing for the golf tournament which is expected to have drawn 100,000 visitors by the time it finishes on Sunday.

It is also being beamed into 500 million homes worldwide.

With fantastic weather showing off the stunning scenery in the area, the attention brought to Inishowen by the golf has the potential to transform tourism there, particularly if there's further investment in infrastructure.

Another very important industry in Inishowen is also looking for investment, particularly in the light of the potential damage which could be caused by Brexit.

Fishermen in Greencastle are calling for the completion of pier works so the harbour can become a hub for bigger boats including cargo ships.

This, they say, would allow Greencastle to take advantage of new opportunities including cruise liners.
