A new courthouse costing almost €20m has been opened in Letterkenny by Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan.

Replacing the courthouse built in 1831, the new building  contains four courtrooms and all the necessary associated facilities including consultation rooms and areas for victim support.

The courtrooms are also fitted with video conferencing and other technology.

The Hon Mr Justice Frank Clarke, Chief Justice of Ireland, said this building reflects the way of the future.

He said it is part of a €140m public private partnership which is delivering seven courthouses across the country.

Minister Flanagan spoke of how courthouses can be intimidating places for many people where life-changing decisions can be made and said it was important that, like this new building, they are in the centre of town and user-friendly.
