A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a shooting incident in Co Derry early this morning.

The PSNI said they received reports that three shots were fired the in the Main Street area of Garvagh at around 3am this morning. 

A 46-year-old man was wounded in the lower leg during the incident.

The victim was taken to hospital where he required surgery for his wound and treatment for other injuries to his face and body.

The PSNI arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and a 28-year-old man on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Police also carried out a number of searches in the Garvagh area and a number of items were taken away for further examination.
