A man has been rescued from the sea south of Árainn Mhór Island, Co Donegal, after apparently falling out of a currach.

A member of the public called 999 after hearing a cry for help and then spotting someone in the water around 10am.

The Arranmore Lifeboat and the Bunbeg coastguard were alerted and the Rescue 118 helicopter was diverted from the search operation for Rescue 116 off Blacksod by Malin Head Coastguard.

The helicopter winched the man from the sea about 25 minutes later and he was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital with a leg injury and hypothermia.

His condition is now described as stable.

A search is ongoing for the man's boat.
