Telescope, toilet seats bought by Murrell with SNP funds

A £1,200 space telescope, a designer bread bin worth £60 and two toilet seats, costing nearly £70, are among the items that former Scottish National Party chief executive Peter Murrell bought using money embezzled from the SNP.

Murrell - the former husband of ex-party leader Nicola Sturgeon - has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than £400,000.

He also bought three designer manicure sets for nearly £194, DVDs of the Danish political thriller Borgen, a Grand Theft Auto V video game and a designer egg poacher set for nearly £24.

Also among his purchases were a Jura Giga 5 Cromo coffee machine for nearly £3,232 and a book of speeches by Ms Sturgeon.

Here is a list of some of items on the 126-page indictment detailing the hundreds of items that Murrell bought using the embezzled funds:

  1. Celestron 10169 NexStar 8SE computerised Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (£1,199). He also bought a number of accessories for the device on the same day.
  2. The Killing seasons 1-3 on DVD (£60). The list also includes purchases of DVDs of Borgen, The Government and Sherlock Holmes.
  3. Grand Theft Auto V for Playstation 4 (£42.99). Other gaming-related purchases on the list include Fifa 2014, Battlefield 4, and a Playstation 3 console.
  4. Three Wusthof manicure sets (£193.70)
  5. Joseph Joseph bread bin (£60)
  6. Netatmo rain gauge for a Netatmo weather station plus mounts for rain and wind gauges (£78.99)
  7. The Beatles special edition fountain pen and rollerball (£1,475)
  8. 1:30 scale model helicopter from Let's Shop Airbus of Airbus Operations Limited (£550.59)
  9. Two pairs of Fit Nation Socks (£11.95)
  10. Victorinox bike tool kit (£22.41)
  11. Two Freskaro carabiner clips and a 2win2buy rock climbing carabiner outdoor sports tool (£40.49)
  12. Oxo Good Grips egg poacher set (£23.98)
  13. Copy of the board game Monopoly, published by Hasbro (£19.79)
  14. Copy of the book Women Hold Up Half the Sky: Selected Speeches of Nicola Sturgeon (£22.04)
  15. Two Fisher bullet space pens in gift boxes and two Fischer Eclipse American technology space pens (£89.25)
