The man accused of murdering an elderly Irish pensioner in London has told the jury that he once accidently struck his former girlfriend in the face.

87-year-old John Mackey died from blunt force impacts to his head and chest as he walked home from his local supermarket and takeaway.

He was originally from Callan, Co Kilkenny but lived in London most of his life.

59-year-old Peter Augustine denies the charges of murder and robbery.

He became highly agitated in the witness box today at the Old Bailey, shouting repeatedly at the prosecution barrister Jane Bickerstaff KC.

"You are stupid," he shouted at her.

"You're long gone. Your ways are ancient!" he added.

Peter Augustine told the jury about previous convictions he had received.

He said he once struck his former girlfriend in the face with his elbow, claiming that it was accidental.

Mr Augustine also told the court that in a separate incident he "smacked" his friend in the face after his friend placed dirty underwear in his laundry.

Peter Augustine recalled being arrested for stealing six bottles of whiskey from an off-licence. He claimed it happened in 1995.

Members of John Mackey's family became visibly upset as Peter Augustine became more agitated and louder.

Judge Sarah Whitehouse adjourned proceedings, after repeated warnings to Mr Augustine to focus on answering questions put to him.

Mr Augustine was allowed to resume his evidence at midday. However, he continued to act in a highly agitated manner.

Judge Whitehouse again appealed to Mr Augustine to answer questions put to him, however she chose to bring his evidence to a close.

"I won't come back," he shouted at the jury.

During his second round of evidence, Peter Augustine had told the court that he had "lied" in his first police interview, during which he claimed that he came upon John Mackey lying on the ground.

He had also claimed that Mr Mackey's bag was also left on the ground after being "blown" by the wind.

In court however, Peter Augustine told the jury that he "grabbed" the bag from Mr Mackey's loose hand.

Mr Augustine claimed that he was scared during the police interview, adding, "I crapped my pants", and that he just wanted to get out of the interview room.

The trial continues.
